Why blog?

“Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.”

- Francis Bacon

At the beginning of the year, my fellow ArtScis and I wrote an essay on writing and what famous writers had to say about it. It became evident when reading quotes from the likes of Samuel Johnson, George Orwell and Francis Bacon that writing is a skill developed from years of training and practice. Samuel Johnson wrote that only after one sets oneself “doggedly” to it will one become a true wordsmith.

In this spirit I’ve decided to maintain a blog. The idea is to write frequently and hone the skills required for a career in writing. It will also serve as a means for friends and family to keep up to date with the trials and adventures of a young ArtSci making his way through university. When I get around to acquiring a DSLR there will be a bevy of photography as well.

Here are some things to look forward to:

1. Photos of the beautiful McMaster campus in winter.

2. Shots of Hamilton’s gritty downtown.

3. Musings on whatever we’re studying in philosophy.

4. ArtSci-related writings.

5. Review of restaurants that deliver to Mac.

6. General day-to-day oddities.
